Tinsel Round The Telly

by Pete Green

/

about

Pete Green's new Christmas song is a chiming, stomping, guitar-drenched, indiepop/glam-rock celebration of all that's gloriously messy about the festive season, conquering cancelled trains and floodwater to spend days on the sofa alongside your loved ones and a wonky tree, watching sentimental television and eating far too much cheese.

A first release since 2016 by the Sheffield singer/songwriter and poet, 'Tinsel Round The Telly' pays unsubtle homage to Christmas classics by Slade and Wizzard and features a suitably messy singalong with Pete's little brothers Chris and Jon, recorded in their mum's front room. Pay £1 or more and push back against the moral depravity of the ruling class as capitalism's latest crisis leaves millions hungry in one of the world's richest nations. All profits from this release go to the UK's Trussell Trust foodbank, providing emergency parcels to those who can't afford to eat over the festive period and beyond.

Thanks for listening, God bless, and a very happy Christmas to you.

lyrics

It's that time of year again, I've failed to plan ahead
I'm stuffing socks into a rucksack on my bed
Engineering works are putting all our plans in disarray
but somehow I'll be home for Christmas Day

And there'll be tinsel round the telly when we go
There might be floods, there won't be snow

Marks & Sparks can keep their posh colour-coordinated tree
The messier the better, that's what it means to me
I just wanna spend it with my brothers and my mum and Jimbob
from now 'til kingdom come

And there'll be tinsel round the telly when we go
There might be floods, there won't be snow
And there'll be tinsel round the telly when we go
Just like the ones I used to know

So I'm gonna wish you a messy Christmas
A messy Christmas and a kinda shambolic new year

[festive guitar solo]

Gather in the glow of our new 48-inch screen
I'm basically a communist but I always watched the queen
Gavin, Stacey, Wallace, Gromit, offer me more cheese
I'll say yes please

And there'll be tinsel round the telly when we go
There might be floods, there won't be snow
And there'll be tinsel round the telly when we go
Just like the ones I used to know
And there'll be a Quorn roast in my belly when we go
Not like the ones I used to know
And there'll be tinsel round the telly when we go
Woah-oh-oh-oh-ohhh
